Volunteer Archives Assistant
Organization Mission
The Mariemont Preservation Foundation (MPF) was established in 1980 to preserve, protect and promote the integrity and character of the Village of Mariemont. MPF is the repository of historical and institutional memory of the Village of Mariemont. Our archive collections range from documents related to the Village’s begginings including photographs, maps, blueprints and newspapers to Native American artifacts that predate the establishment of the Village.
Volunteer Role Summary
The Mariemont Preservation Foundation (MPF) is seeking a detail-oriented and curious
volunteer to support its research and archival access efforts. In this role, the volunteer will serve as a key point of assistance for individuals requesting information from MPF’s archival collections. These requests may come from community members, students, historians, or other researchers interested in the rich history of Mariemont.
The volunteer will be responsible for reviewing incoming research requests, identifying relevant materials within the archives, and retrieving those items for use. This includes working with a variety of historic resources such as photographs, maps, documents, blueprints, newspapers, and artifacts. Careful handling and organization of materials is essential to ensure their preservation for future generations.
As part of their responsibilities, the volunteer will be trained to use MPF’s archival management system, PastPerfect Web, to search for and locate materials efficiently. Training will also cover best practices for archival handling, storage procedures, and maintaining accurate records of materials accessed.
Beyond fulfilling research requests, this role offers a unique opportunity to engage directly with the history of Mariemont and contribute to preserving its institutional memory. Volunteers may gain insight into archival processes, historical research methods, and the stories that shape the community.
This position requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to follow established procedures. Comfort working independently is important, though support and guidance will be available as needed. No prior archival experience is required as training will be provided.
The expected time commitment is approximately 10 hours per month, though this may vary depending on the volume of research requests. Scheduling can be flexible and coordinated with MPF staff.
