A team of MPF docents organized special activity stations at the Madisonville Site for Second Graders to enhance their knowledge of the Late Fort Ancient Native Americans who inhabited this Site some 500 years ago.
The stations included a “mock” archaeological dig; ancient Native American Indian musical instruments; pottery making; artifacts, and more, all geared towards a fun learning experience for the students.
Third Graders received a presentation on the first pioneers who settled in this area by following a timeline from when Major Benjamin Stites first settled Columbia (Tusculum) in 1788 to the Ferris brothers, Elipahlet, Joseph and Andrew and their cousin John Jay who arrived from Greenwich Connecticut in 1799 and purchased land from Benjamin Stites which later became Mariemont. The students then walked to the Ferris Family Cemetery where an MPF docent gave a tour of the cemetery and the students searched for names of Ferris family members on tombstones.
